James Hubert “Eubie” Blake was an iconic American pianist, composer, and songwriter whose influence helped shape the foundation of jazz, ragtime, and American popular music. Known for his lively playing style and melodic ingenuity, Blake brought joy, sophistication, and innovation to every performance, leaving an enduring mark on the musical landscape.
He gained widespread recognition as the co-creator of the groundbreaking Broadway musical Shuffle Along, a historic production that opened doors for Black artists and transformed musical theater. In 1978, the Broadway musical Eubie! showcased his works, and in 1981, President Ronald Reagan awarded Blake the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Throughout his long and celebrated career, Blake remained a dedicated performer and cultural ambassador, preserving the spirit of early jazz while inspiring generations to come.
